Rande Bridge: an icon of Galician infrastructure

A symbol of Galician infrastructure. A model extension for a project that was nominated for the Nobel Prize for infrastructure.

The AP-9, also known as the Atlantic Highway, is a strategic axis for mobility in Galicia, linking cities such as Ferrol, Coruña, Santiago, Pontevedra and Vigo, also reaching the Portuguese border.

Among its main infrastructures is the Rande Bridge, which was inaugurated in 1981. The intense activity and the passage of time made it necessary to renovate the bridge in order to expand and modernize it.

This intervention has been led by Dragados, which has increased the capacity of the infrastructure by 40%, adding a third lane in each direction. Beyond its practical function, the Rande Bridge also stands out because at the time it was the second longest cable-stayed bridge in the world, with a span of 400 meters in its central section. This extension was exemplary, as never before had a bridge of these characteristics been extended without interrupting traffic at any time.

The integral approach of the project, as well as the innovative and sustainable solutions, earned it international recognition, such as its nomination for the OSTRA awards, although the best award for Dragados is the satisfaction of the millions of users who have been able to move efficiently and safely since its commissioning.
